What do the campaigns involve?
Save the Whales
In 1986, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) enacted a moratorium on commercial whaling. Since then, Iceland, Norway and Japan have continued to slaughter whales under the guise of scientific research.
This means that thousands of whales are killed every year in cruel and unnecessary hunts that cause intense pain and distress.
WSPA works to stop all commercial and scientific whaling by increasing the profile of whale welfare within the International Whaling Commission and supporting member societies in their campaigns against whaling on welfare grounds.
Save the Whales

Orangutans
The orangutans’ forest home in Borneo is being destroyed to make way for palm oil production, with young orangutans being sold into the cruelty of the illegal pet trade.
WSPA supports the Nyaru Menteng sanctuary in Borneo, a safe haven for these defenceless creatures. At Nyaru Menteng rescued orangutans are taught the independence they need to return to the rainforests where they belong.

Save the Bears
Over 12,000 bears are currently held captive in Asian bear “farms”, where bile is removed from their gall bladders in cruel ways for use in Asian medicines.
Most are held indoors, within cages in which they are unable to stand and can barely turn around.
WSPA is working to end bear farming by working in partnership with Asian governments through research, education and diplomacy and calling for an end to the illegal trade in bear products.
